The North Shore Comets
Highlights

Anja Fouche and Ulandi Teubes are the founders of the North Shore Netball Club, the Comets. They have many years of experience in coaching, umpiring, managing and playing netball between the two of them. They both live on the North Shore and their love for the game inspired them to bring this fun team sport to the North Shore community.

"Big things start in small places" was really true as our first 3 practices were in a small gym at Fromme Elementary School in November 2004. Only a handful of people came to the first few practices, but the word spread and the numbers grew quickly. In February 2005 the North Shore Comets Netball website was started, netball posts were donated and practices moved to John Braithwaite community gym. Brand new netballs, reaction balls and bibs arrived in May and allowed players to engage in more varied skills and exercises.

Although netball is a winter sport, we continued through the summer of 2005. We played friendly games against high schools and other clubs in the area and enjoyed a few outdoor netball games on Ambleside's beach and grass fields. The annual Outdoor Sunfest tournament hosted by Victoria Netball club on Vancouver Island was a great experience and we are definitely adding that to our annual netball program.

The Comets entered their first league team into the Vancouver Amateur Netball Association (V.A.N.A.) League in September 2005. After winning the C division and gaining players over the summer holidays, we entered two teams in the September 2006 V.A.N.A league, one team in the C and B devision each.

In the summer of 2007 we hosted summer drop-in games which attracted many players from other clubs in the Lower Mainland too. We also got to play against visiting teams from England and Australia. Ann Wilcocks presented an umpiring clinic in our gym and we added two new umpires to our numbers.

An exciting and important event in our club's history was when the Comets got their uniform in July 2007. This was made possible by the generosity of the ever-good humoured Kerry McDevitt of K&D Marine, and we are very proud to play in our snazzy new athletic outfits!

In August 2007 the Comets hosted their first outdoor netball tournament, called the Comets Netball Sizzler. Netballers from all clubs were invited and brought their friends and family with to play mixed netball games(combined ladies and men's teams), after which we all headed for a Sizzler Pub Night. The day was a huge success and will definitely become an annual highlight on our calender.

Our numbers continued to grow steadily and for the first time in our club's history, we entered three teams in the Winter 2008 league (January - April). One team in the B division, called the Titans, and two teams in the C division, namely Galaxy and the Zodiacs. All three our teams continue on a winning streak, but what keeps us so enthusiastic is our team camaraderie and love for the game.

The fall of 2008 saw another milestone for the Comets when we entered two new teams, Phoenix in the C league and Lynx in the A league. We now have 1 A team, 1 B team and 3 C teams. We keep on growing and look forward to more new players in the future.

 Go Comets!
