WHY “GALAXY”?

A GALAXY is a massive, gravitationally bound system consisting of stars, an interstellar medium of gas and dust, and dark matter. Typical galaxies range from dwarfs with as few as ten million stars up to giants with one trillion stars, all orbiting a common center of mass. Galaxies can also contain many multiple star systems, star clusters, and various interstellar clouds. The Sun is one of the stars in the Milky Way galaxy; the Solar System includes the Earth and all the other objects that orbit the Sun.

Our GALAXY is called the Milky Way, which is the home of our Solar System. The word Galaxy comes from the Greek word meaning "milky". Ancients thought it looked like a river of milk in the sky and they believed milk to be the liquid that brings life. The Milky Way was thus believed to be the river bringing life from the heavens down to the Earth.
