Phoenix
Presenting the brand new Comets team - Phoenix. They are quickly getting to know each other and are improving with every game. Go Phoenix! WHY “PHOENIX”?
The word, PHOENIX, which is a very popular name in astronomical circles, means “dark red” and is believed to refer to the sun, which supports all life on Earth. With the successful landing of the Phoenix Mars Lander on May 25, 2008, history was made for the Canadian Space Agency and all Canadians. A vital instrument on board the Lander is the Canadian built Meteorological Station (MET), the first piece of Canadian technology to arrive on Mars.
In Greek mythology, the PHOENIX is a sacred dark red firebird that symbolises the immortal soul, which, although it cannot die, needs periodic renewal in the fires of purification. Every morning as the Sun rose, it would immerse itself in the cool clear water of a well and sing such a delightful and sweet song that the Sun God would stop his chariot to listen to the beautiful sound. Every 500 years, as death approached, it would construct a nest of sweet smelling wood that it then set upon fire, the flames consuming the bird. From the ashes, a new Phoenix arose, to once again exhibit a magical performance.
